Bring it on, Angela. Thanks for stepping into this crisis and speaking for so many of us. You continue to give us courage to seek the Way in our own small corners of culture. I’m heartsick that you have had to increase security for yourself and your family. What dark times we are in for folks like yourself who willingly stand up to dark power.

I ache for the ELCA to take a louder, clearer, more visible stance in these culture wars. Perhaps with our new Presiding Bishop we will step out of our white, middle class, business-modeled, middle America personality more. It’s about time our denomination stands for something beyond our social statements.

You wrote an excellent article, and one that ought to have been printed and widely shared. I will share this with others. Is there a chance another newspaper or magazine might pick this up? Also, I wonder if someone like Chris Hedges or Katie Halpern might be interested in sharing this story of censorship. It is disgusting that the Strib published only articles by white conservative males who completely, intentionally distorted the significance of Charlie Kirk and also of his terrible death. Your perspective still needs to be heard - now more than ever.

Thanks, Gary. I don’t know Chris or Katie - but I’m hopeful that more journalists/outlets will be reporting and writing on this story soon. There is a lot going on behind the scenes. 🙏🏻

Thank you for responding to that editorial writer. I hope that there is a lot of righteous indignation in his congregation. I couldn't believe his lack of "moral clarity" as Bishop Loya wrote. Thank you so much for standing up and being counted. I have a subscription to the Star Tribune, but I find I am getting more of my news from MinnPost (also a subscriber), the Minnesota Reformer (subscriber) and SubStack. As always, appreciate so much what you are doing. Silence is complicity and we cannot be silent! Namaste.

Thanks for sharing this powerful, direct, often heartbreaking column and context. You probably know by now that our ELCA bishops have just published a very extensive and direct letter condemning "Christian nationalism." I must wonder how many pastors and leaders in the church will share this with their congregations, perhaps with dedicated discussion. Its recent Churchwide Assembly approved a statement on faith and civic life that made many of the same points.

"Take heart, and be not afraid" we must continue to remind one another.

Thank you for sharing this - I’m heartbroken over the StarTribune’s choices editorially the last several years. I’m amazed (or maybe not, as things go now) at how you’ve been treated by the paper. Like you I have a lifelong love of newspapers and the StarTrib has been “my” newspaper since my Dakota childhood. My normal reaction would be to cancel my subscription but I’ll stay tuned to them - I’ll subscribe here and purchase your book (that’ll show them!) instead.

Stay well

Thank you for sharing your article, Angela. You spoke the truth to power with conviction while at the same time having empathy… I hate that you have to increase your security measures… that’s the sort of thing that happened when this military chaplain was in a war zone!

It's OK. Honestly, the threats have significantly decreased (toward me and toward my church) since I stopped writing for the Star Tribune. Lots of animus directed at them specifically (which is ironic, of course, since they were also wanting to censor me!)

Thanks for sharing that update. The irony isn’t lost on me. I have so many memories of the Minneapolis Tribune sitting by my Dad’s chair in the den.

Gosh. Me, too. And scouring the high school scores for my name.

Thank you for being willing to share the truth when others would rather hide it. The distortion of Scripture to make this kind of behavior acceptable is destroying society and the Church that seeks to follow the teachings of Jesus. Christian Nationalists are seeking to build a kingdom, but it is not in any way related to the Kingdom of God. Without the truth all of us live in a darkness that threatens our lives. Continue to let your light shine so that those who are looking for hope will know all is not lost.
